Dear Mr. Cummings:
When I saw your posting for an internship on the University of Virginia's career-services website, I wanted to enthusiastically request consideration for this amazing opportunity. As documented on the enclosed resume, I am currently an English major in my junior year, with a strong interest in a journalism career.
As an intern at Any Newspaper, I would use and enhance writing, editing, and research skills gained as a dedicated student and through co-curricular activities, including those associated with student publications. Studying literature, creative writing, composition, and grammar, and via related papers, projects, and essays, I have learned to complete assignments accurately, on time, with openness to critique and constructive editorial efforts. As a reporter for my high school newspaper and contributor to the yearbook, I was initiated to journalistic style, layout and design, and publishing software, including PageMaker and Quark Xpress. Samples of my work in these contexts are also enclosed.
I now possess the heart of a liberal arts student, ever curious, eager to share newly discovered information with others, and open to new experiences. Yet I seek to nurture the mind of a journalist who must perform interviews to draft and finalize features, news pieces, obituaries, special-event announcements, and other copy. Please allow me the opportunity to contribute to Any Newspaper and grow professionally and emotionally, gaining greater career focus, as your summer intern.
I will call your office next week to confirm your receipt of my resume and inquire about the possibility of an interview. In the interim, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me through the information above. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely yours,
